October already! Our Vintage and Antique Lighting with Fine Collectibles is a great way to begin the first days of autumn. Truly an expansive selection of lighting, from large leaded glass hanging shades, Art Nouveau art glass shades and Art Deco fixtures, to figural antique oil lamps, and vintage railway switch lamps, to MCM pole lamps and Haeger TV lights.
As well, amongst the many pieces of collectible glass and ceramic on offer in the”Fine Collectibles” portion of the auction, some of the rarer items are by Bernard Moore, an English potter and ceramic chemist, known for his pioneering use of flambe glazes. Born in 1850, and died 1935, his pottery studio was in production from 1905-1915. His work was expensive for the time, and he was patronized by the aristocracy and royalty – notably Queen Mary, who was a great patron to the Stoke Pottery Industry, where Moore’s studio was located. Infamously, he lost a large body of his work in a fire which ravaged the Brussels International Exhibition of 1910. His innovative decorative pieces are highly collectible, and we are pleased to offer a number of them in our current auction.
Along with many original works of art, we are starting the auction off with a Suzor Cote charcoal. Marc Aurele de Foy Suzor Cote (1869-1937) was a French Canadian painter and sculptor – one of the first Canadian painters to be directly influenced by French impressionism. His work has appeared on Canada Post issued stamps, and hangs in the National Gallery of Canada. Initially trained as a baritone musician, studying at the Conservatory of Music in Paris, he later studied under Leon Bonnat at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He had numerous exhibitions throughout his life, both in Canada and Europe, and was made an Officer of the Academy of France in 1901, a great honour for a foreign born artist. The charcoal mill drawing we have on offer is from earlier in his career, when, after returning to Quebec from Europe, his work was mostly devoted to creating classical interpretations of Canadian landscapes.
Much of our October auction is devoted to the  decorative – items whose chief purpose is to be admired! Some favourites are the irridescent, shell shaped bowl, beautifully detailed, in a buttercup yellow when held up to the sun. Collectors of formal glassware will love the cranberry epergne, with a ruffled cranberry bowl, with 3 uprights for hanging baskets. Sitting on an early square mirrored lake, it is truly a work of art. Our large bisque porcelain figures are a dramatic pair, perfect for a fireplace mantle. With Thanksgiving and Christmas fast approaching, now is the time to up your dining table game! Lovely large sets of Royal Albert and Paragon dinnerware, in like new condition, would be a great start. Our ruby red 1930’s New Martinsville  glassware would be a festive addition, along with brightly polished plate stands for desserts, and signed Stuart glassware.
Finally, we have an extraordinary collection of mid century table lamps. From very large pairs of figural chalkware lamps, to glossy ceramic TV lights, many come with their original fiberglass shades. With their bright colours, and fun, kitschy subject matter, they would be equally at home as a one off, conversation piece, or as part of a larger collection in an MCM decorated home.
As always, we encourage you to take a fall country drive to Brantford to view the auction in person.
Please note, due to the Thanksgiving weekend, we are offering 2 pickup days, Saturday Oct. 11 and Monday Oct. 13, from 11-4.
