Our current auction is largely from the estate of a lifelong collector of Canadiana, with a few select additions. One of the highlights of the auction is a painted antique pie safe, in its original unrestored condition. With pierced tin panels in front and in turquoise paint with a beautiful patina, this is a real find for any collector.
The collection of tobacco tins includes some that are rarely seen. Many were created for specific markets – such as the “Inter Collegiate” tin, promising “Student’s Solace’, and with wonderful old graphics of a college rowing team and cricket balls and bats. The “Red J” has a brilliant red jay on the front, and the “Light Sweet Cuba” tin is in a green as vibrant as the day it was made. In a nod to our recently departed Canadian icon, Hudson’s Bay, we have a “Cut Plug Tobacco” tin, with the charter granted by Charles II, “The Governor and Company of Adventurers of England Trading into Hudson’s Bay” impressed on the bottom of the tin.
We have 3 cars on offer, including a red Mercedes convertible SLK 320 , just in time for warm summer breezes! The 1985 Oldsmobile 88 is a dependable workhorse of a car, lovingly looked after, and always stored in the winter, so it is in excellent condition. With a new battery and rubber in good condition, it has many years of life left. The 1959 Isetta is definitely the rarest car we have had the pleasure of auctioning. Originally manufactured in 1953 by the Italian firm “Iso SpA”, Isetta is the diminutive form of “Iso”, so, “Little Iso”. Also known as the bubble car, BMW took over manufacturing of the Isetta in 1955. With a single cylinder and a 13 litre gas tank, the
BMW Isetta became the first mass produced car in the world to achieve a fuel consumption of 5 litres/100 km.or 70 mpg. By the time they ceased production in 1962, over 160,000 Isettas had been made. This is a tiny, compact car, with a unique single door design, which opens at the front of the vehicle. Professionally restored, this little guy is ready to go for city driving.
Our selection of folk art animals includes a spectacular carved seagull by the folk artist Don Boudreau. Originally working in the fishing industry, and as a lumberjack in Nova Scotia, Don became a folk artist in the 70’s, beginning his artistic career at the behest of his wife, who requested a lawn ornament. His work can be found in many collections, including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and The Canadian Museum of Civilization. Along with some smaller carved farm animals, there is a wonderful antique copper cow weathervane, beautifully detailed and in very good condition.
Also for auction are well over a dozen vintage musical instruments, including horns, flutes, saxophones and more, as well as a selection of hand knotted wool carpets, in excellent condition.
Finally, along with many rare and signed antique tools, we have a number of workshop tools, all working, including a band saw, drill press, floor grinder, chisel mortiser, Hitachi compressor, and a large selection of miscellaneous smaller tools and hardware.
