GREATER TORONTO AREA ESTATES AUCTION

Location: Moffat, ON
Date: November 1-14, 2024
November 1-14, 2024 This auction contains a very wide variety of lots including mid-century pottery and lighting, valuable designer furnishings and chandeliers, Inuit prints and sculptures, Queen Anne, Georgian, Regency and Victorian formal furniture, vintage men’s wrist watches, designer scarves, coins, Persian carpets, 19th C art reference books, gold and costume jewellery, sterling flatware and serving pieces, Swarovski crystal, Japanese and Chinese art, vintage posters, bone china, and a large vintage Marklin HO scale train set, along with many other unusual items.

When you collate several estates into one auction the variety and range of antiques, collectibles and designer pieces is far ranging.  This auction brings together articles from several estates and downsizing situations in Rosedale, North York, Forest Hill, downtown Toronto, Oakville, Burlington all the way to the shores of Lake Erie.

From one dramatically furnished apartment we are bringing to auction replicas of some of the great modern designers like BRNO chrome and leather chairs originally created by Mies van der Rohe for Knoll Furniture, chandeliers by Schonbek and Bonnington that are dazzling with all their crystal prisms, an Egg chair after Arne Jacobsen’s design and an Art Deco styled sideboard made by the American firm National Mt Airy.  There is also a custom made coffee table where the top was fashioned from a large envelope of grey acrylic fitted over a steel frame to give a sleek clean look.  One lighting highlight is an ingenious piece of engineering by Gae Aulenti where the stainless steel column of the lamp telescopes it from a table lamp to a floor lamp.

Modern day designers and crafts people often gained their inspiration from the world of antiques.  One such example is the individually hand carved modern mirror by the American Carvers Guild that updated the design of an English antique Georgian mirror. Our auction combines the old with the modern giving you the opportunity to purchase pieces that have stood the test of time and retained their elegance.  This auction is replete with many very well crafted antiques.  Some of the highlights include a very practical Georgian dining table that can be configured to seat 4 to 10 people, pedestal tables from the Queen Anne and Chippendale periods that can serve as vase stands, lamp tables, or unique accent pieces,  a mahogany Victorian sideboard that is versatile enough to  complement a dining room, a foyer, or even a bedroom , and an exceptional Scottish John Hamilton grandfather clock nearly two hundred and fifty years old that would add formal elegance to a dining room, parlour, den, office or hallway.  Combing the old and the new can give your home a look of elegance and style that friends will envy.

As you peruse the auction you will see several interesting pieces of pottery.  There is the scarce Eventide bowl by Moorcroft, a Beswick Haunted House serving bowl, a Rookwood vase designed by Hatie Wilcox, and a major terra cotta sculpture by Goldscheider of Rose the Skier—not Rosie the Riveter.  Interest in collecting Canadian pottery is on the rise.  Lorenzen Pottery and David Lambert are but two names to check out. Also, check out the elaborately formed and decorated tea pots from Jan Axel of NY State – definitely imaginative designs!

As usual our auction covers the walls with many types of art.  From Chinese scrolls, Inuit prints and sculpture, to antique prints, to paintings by several Canadian artists that were sold through the Art Gallery of Ontario sales and rentals department.  Two highlights are the watercolours by Charles Gruppe born in Picton, Ontario but considered an American landscape and portrait artist. A discovery in this auction was the charcoal Hudson River painting on sandpaper, a very moody folk painting by an anonymous artist.

The walls are covered.  The rooms are furnished.  But there is much more.  There is a lot of sterling silver, mostly flatware but some serving and hollow ware pieces by many makers including Birks and Ellis, as well as silversmiths from London and Birmingham.  To complement the sterling there is bone china and porcelain tea cups by Shelley, Paragon and Royal Stafford.  This is the third and final cataloguing of the Swarovski crystal figurines.

And of course we have a selection of older and more modern Persian carpets.  There are runners, area rugs and full size room rugs.

For watch collectors we have over a dozen men’s wrist watches by Longines, Hamilton, Wittnauer, and Waltham.  Some are gold filled or plated but others are solid gold. All are vintage or antique from one gentleman’s collection.

For the train enthusiast we have an HO scale model train collection.  Most cars, locomotives and track are Marklin, with some British locomotives by Hornby.  The train set was enhanced with buildings, models, accessories etc. While the collection is broken into a number of lots, there are photos of the entire set as it had been assembled in each of the lot listings.

Enjoy your visit to this auction and as always call to arrange a preview.
