Once again we have a diverse offering of antiques, collectibles and fine furnishings. One of the collections spans a remarkable 70 years and two generations. We have brought together collections from the shores of Georgian Bay and Lake Erie, the Muskokas and various parts of Toronto and the GTA.
Back in the day collectors would pack their lunches, kids and a friend or two and set off to explore shops, auctions, travelling along their favourite trap lines. You built connections with dealers who would set aside special pieces for you. Two generations of collecting went into acquiring the pieces of milk glass we have in our auction. Not every piece is perfect. Some have cracks or chips but every piece is a good example of early milk glass. There are the hens-on- nest that we associate with milk glass. But there are scarce pieces like Admiral Dewey or Uncle Sam or lions on nests that are less frequently found. There are three highlights that need to be mentioned individually. The first is a free blown clambroth coloured wall plaque with a transfer print of a mother and child. This is the only known example of this plaque. The plaque has been shown to collectors in Canada and the US and so far, no other example has turned up. Second is the Vallerysthal blue milk glass egg tray. It retains its original label. The oral history is that this set was gifted to Theodore Roosevelt. There is no documentation, nor is there a trail as to how it was deaccessioned and came to Canada. But the story was told by a long since deceased antique dealer who swears the story was true. Finally, while not milk glass, but rather free blown art glass is the matched pair of mushroom vases or candle holders. Again these are scarce if not unique examples. What makes the collection even more noteworthy, is the fact the collector has carefully documented each piece using his reference library. This required a significant amount of research.
In addition to milk glass, we have brought together a collection of early American pressed glass and lighting. Of special note are the canary hobnail glass berry set, and the Canadian panelled thistle rose bowls, banana boats, etc., made by the Jefferson Glass Co., Toronto. Fine examples of early lighting include the three railroad lamps, the cobalt blue Princess Feather lamp, and the S. Clarke Fairy Lamp. There is an exceptional cigar lamp with a bronze wash figural base, dual cigar lighters and the original cranberry shade.
We have several examples of Italian and French pottery. The colourful pottery Nove Rose includes examples of tazzas, plates, cups. Adding more colour are the examples of Quimper including water pots, serving dishes, bowls and plates.
We have added many fine furnishings to our current auction. There are oriented carpets, early and contemporary lighting, a scarce pair of Channel Back (art deco) slipper chairs, a complete Queen Anne style antique dining set c1890, an English country king sized bed, and fine furnishings made by leading contemporary manufacturers including the Hickory Chair Co., Baker, and Leda. You will notice in the auction listing that we have added pictures to show the furnishings in the home setting.
Come out if you can and see the quality for yourself.
